Common orthodontic issues and what to do
1. Loose Bracket or Band
What to Do: If a bracket or band becomes loose, try to keep it intact if possible. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges. Contact our office to schedule a repair.
2. Poking Wire
What to Do: If a wire is poking your cheek or gums, try to gently push it back into place with a cotton swab or the eraser end of a pencil. If it’s too painful, cover the area with orthodontic wax and call our office for assistance.
If the area is visible and accessible, you can try cutting the wire with a clean nail cutter.
3. Broken Wire
What to Do: If a wire breaks, use wax to cover any sharp ends. Avoid attempting to fix it yourself and contact our office for a repair appointment.
4. Lost Separator
What to Do: If a separator falls out, don’t worry! Simply call our office to let us know. We may need to replace it.
5. Soreness or Discomfort
What to Do: Mild discomfort is normal after adjustments. Rinse with warm salt water or take over-the-counter pain relief as needed.
If pain persists or worsens, contact our office.
6. Lost Retainer
What to Do: If your retainer is missing, contact our office to schedule a fitting for a new retainer.
